Corn cobs in a pile

Abrasive/Polishing Applications

Corn cob grit simultaneously polishes and deburs parts while cleaning and drying them. Corn cobs offer a wide range of grit sizes, including custom sizing to be used as an abrasive or polishing component. The grade selection is typically determined by the desired finished surface and the diameter of any holes or cavities in the object. The size of grit should not contain particles that would lodge in part openings. Cobs are a low-density granular product used to de-burr, burnish, and polish a wide variety of products including:

  • Tubular products
  • Roller chains
  • Engine parts
  • Ball bearings
  • Nuts and bolts
  • Aluminum
  • Cutlery
  • Jewelry
  • Antiques

Cleaning Applications

Dry cleaning operations have used corn cob granules mixed with dry cleaning fluid to clean fur garments. Fur pelts such as mink pelts have been cleaned and dressed using corn cob granules, mainly the woody ring of the cob for several years.

Cobs are gentle enough to clean surfaces without damaging the underlying material that must not be harmed such as cleaning fire/smoke damage, cleaning wooden houses/barns before painting, and the removal of graffiti from wood, stone or brick. This organic blasting media is resistant to break down and can be re-used multiple times in the blasting process.
